What is the traffic like between Leeds and Manchester?

In August I will be staying at my dads in Chapel Allerton Leeds, I will need to commute daily to Sale, Manchester, He has said he would prefer me to stay in Manchester as the roads are really bad there and It will take me hours, I need to be in Sale for approx 9am - 9.30am leaving approx 4pm, can anyone help, what would you reccommend? :-)
